SHAKIN' NOT STIRRED to hold album release party LIVE AT THE LINEN Feb. 27 Self-titled album, the eclectic folk/swing band's first official release, will be performed in its entirety at the party Shakin' Not Stirred will launch its self-titled debut during an album release party at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Linen Building, 1402 W. Grove St. in Downtown Boise's Linen District. Tickets are $7 in advance or day of show. Advance tickets are now available online at brownpapertickets.com/event/98629. All ages, full bar (ID required). At last, this eclectic folk/swing band is launching its first album, Shakin' Not Stirred. There's no better excuse to party, so the public is invited to come down to the Linen Building to celebrate with Michelle, Dominique, Dan and Josh as they perform the album in its entirety with special guests. Like a good cocktail, Shakin' Not Stirred goes down smooth but delivers a wallop - an acoustic and vocal concoction of original, soulful folk and classic swing/jazz covers. The band's three-part harmonies, accompanied by guitars, bass and mandolin, sneak up on you like dry gin, but you always feel good the next morning. Some liken Shakin' Not Stirred to a homegrown cross between Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks and The Wailin' Jennys. A good portion of the material on the CD is original, and the musicians rearrange their covers for a fresh, unique sound. On stage, the group's contagious good humor and energetic performances inspired Idaho Statesman columnist Diane Ronayne to write, "It's as if they KNOW this is supposed to be fun." ABOUT SHAKIN' NOT STIRRED: Passionate about their music, Shakin' Not Stirred (shakintheband.com) manage a full performance schedule while holding on to their day jobs as an arts administrator, massage therapist, carpenter and mailman. Lead singer and guitarist Michelle Coleman, born into a family of singers, learned to sing harmonies and play guitar from her older siblings, who traveled as professional musicians. During their home-town performances, Coleman would join the family band at local night clubs, crooning till all hours and still managing to get up in time for high school biology class (most days). Coleman established herself as a professional singer-songwriter while living in Iowa in the 1980s and '90s, writing and performing with several musicians. In 1996, she founded the band Too Much Yang, performing jazz/swing on the Midwest pub-and-festival circuit. Yang's nine-year joyride ended when Coleman moved to Idaho in 2005. An accomplished mandolin player and vocalist, Tardif traveled for years as a professional musician, becoming proficient in bluegrass, folk and swing - all influences she brought to that kitchen table. Next came the gents: Daniel Reed and Josh Bogle. These dudes motivated the dudettes out of the kitchen and into Boise's live music scene. Bassist Reed's baritone completes the trio, delivering full, rich, vocal harmonies. He has performed professionally with several bands from his early days in California to his now home-sweet-home, Boise. Bogle's lead guitar fills out the band's sound and keeps the energy high. He says he has been playing music for more years than he's been conscious, has recorded eight albums with four different groups (this CD may be the most unique), and has an actual degree in guitar, which qualifies him to be a damn fine carpenter. Also performing on the CD and at the release party are Tom Tompkins (viola/violin) and Andy Pendley (dobro). Coleman sums up the Shakin' Not Stirred experience: "When we finally get to playin,' it's time to cut loose. And while we take the music seriously, we can never take ourselves too seriously."
